The Victims and Slaves of Availability

The use of technology is extremely widespread - to the extent that people start believing that they were born to serve technology  —  and availability.

Individuals are expected to be available day and night, reply within minutes to every message and answer the telephone at all times.

Of course social technology was meant to be helpful tools for people, not the other way around. And its end was certainly not stalking. The purpose was not for us to become slaves to the possibilities of "hi-tech" or would-be victims of others deluded expectations of availability.

Just because you technically can write a long e-mail, it doesn't mean that you have to or even should. Just because you can technically sleep with the phone by your side, it doesn't mean you have to deny yourself rest just to serve others' arbitrary need for contact.

But more and more people seem to think so. They like to impose such expectations when they are on the other end of sacrifices. Especially when they consider people around them to be merely options, extras and stepping stones in their own lives.

A destructive consequence of this development is that we are deluged with ("drowned" by) information and messages. This exposes us to unnecessarily high levels of radiation and stress and also, in the long run, repetitive strain injuries.

It's far too easy to fall into these traps of misguided expectations and mostly selfish demands, and try to please everyone who
finds it convenient to demand attention. For example because they happen to have nothing more fun to do at the time and their usual source of attention is absent. Or they have created problems for themselves. Or wish to live above their means. And in all these cases they expect you to compensate for it.

Personally,
my True North helps me understand what my purpose and obligations in life are. One of them is to stay healthy.

I have spent so extremely many hours working and typing by the computer that I have developed signs of rheumatoid arthritis in my fingers and forearms. Especially my wrists and fingers tingle and "burn" as from acid when I type. If I want to make this inflammatory disorder worse, I will continue typing extravagantly and write unnecessary explanations or reports.

I choose to stay healthy. And productive. The less I waste on others' whimsical needs, the more I can put my life on something good.

The time and energy leeches will not approve, because it's not convenient for them and because it doesn't serve their agendas and personal gains. Unfortunately for these creatures, that's their problem - and a grave problem at that. If egocentric and for the most part seriously emotionally disturbed people are under the delusion that their will is the God-given law and center of everyone's lives, reality will keep reminding them otherwise on a daily basis.

To every sane and sound person, every constructive thing in life has its own time and pace and place. Everybody who remains sane and sound, puts this first.

Slussen by Night

This area of Stockholm is called Slussen.

According to city plans, in the near future this look will change. Architects have already submitted their proposals. I believe one has been chosen.

I took this without flash, as usual. It was a snap shot as I was strolling by late in the evening. I had my digital pocket camera in my, well, pocket. The photo turned out pretty serene, the way that the scenery made me feel.
